The CIC is privileged to host Alexandre Havard's Virtuous Leadership Institute for a two-hour workshop exploring the distinctions of leadership as they are rooted in the classical virtues.

$40 includes the two-hour seminar and a light breakfast. Discounted copies of Havard's modern classic, "Virtuous Leadership: An Agenda for Personal Excellence" will be available for participants. In exchange for two hours and $40 you will receive the intellectual and practical framework to effectively govern yourself and lead those whom you live and work with. You will also meet some great professionals who - like you - are seeking to make a difference in your government, organization and community.

Who is Alexandre Havard? Havard is an international speaker, attorney, author, and now founder of the Havard Virtuous Leadership Institute, an organization dedicated to promoting the classical virtues as the basis for effective leadership and personal excellence. Born in France, Mr. Havard is an attorney who has practiced in Strasbourg and Helsinki. Since 2007 he has been living and working in Moscow, where he represents the HVLI network and offers Virtuous Leadership seminars to private and public sector executives, academics, scholars, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Leadership is neither a skill nor a technique but a state of being.  It is a question of character, of virtue in action. Adapting leadership concepts derived from the classical European philosophical tradition to today's modern organizations, Virtuous Leadership transcends the common perception of leadership as a matter of charisma and personal style and the employment of techniques of persuasion that all too often lapse into manipulation.

The program challenges participants to review their assumptions about leadership and their criteria for professional success in light of the classical virtues, imparting a new awareness of virtue as the key to:

  • Effective decision-making
  • The formulation of compelling and realistic strategic plans
  • Building consensus
  • Effective communication
  • Winning trust and loyalty
  • Motivating others through the human attractiveness of the leader’s personality
  • Creating a rich and genuine organizational culture

By providing a framework for understanding the classical virtues and a methodology for practicing them, Virtuous Leadership helps participants to acknowledge their strengths and flaws from a leadership perspective and gives them the necessary means to improve – professionally and personally.

"Virtuous Leadership seminars provide an actionable framework for executives to use both in developing themselves personally as well as in leading their organizations. The VL framework provides a tight and accessible summary of the classic virtues that have provided the foundation for leaders from the beginning of recorded history, along with plenty of current examples of people who have modeled them well. Havard knows the values-based leadership literature, is steeped in Western philosophy and ethics, and brings it all to bear to discuss the challenges facing the modern leader."

- Timothy Belton, CEO, Houston, TX.
